LITTLETON, Vt. (AP) - Residents of a Vermont town say they support a proposed addition to a bridge to make a crossing for snowmobiles.

Officials said Wednesday that the proposed crossing would be added to the Route 18 bridge between Littleton and Waterford as a matter of safety. The Caledonian-Record reports local trail master Doug Cross says many snowmobilers cross on a nearby reservoir, which can be dangerous on times of thin ice.

Proponents also look at the 6-foot-wide extension that would be attached to the bridge as a way to offer for more recreational opportunities in the region and boost local economies.

The meeting Wednesday was not an official meeting, but officials say it will begin a conversation.
