SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - Police in Delaware say scammers are posing as young women on dating sites and then trying to extort men with sham claims of child exploitation investigations.

The News Journal reports Smyrna police say they believe the scam is part of a national racket.

Police say the scammers are trading explicit photos and then claiming to be local officers investigating the men. The scammers demand payment to avoid arrest, usually via Green Dot cards or PayPal.

Smyrna police spokesman Cpl. Brian Donner said in a news release that anyone questioning the credibility of someone claiming to be an officer can call 911 or the dispatch center.
