Clearly Judge Brett Kavanaugh has a remarkable command of the law, has written well-reasoned decisions and treats lawyers before him with courtesy (unlike the way Ruth Bader Gisnberg treated attorneys arguing before her when she was on the D.C. Circuit). If confirmed he will make great contributions at the U.S. Supreme Court.

It would, however, be good, in the event President Trump gets another appointment, to appoint someone who has practiced law outside the rarefied atmosphere of Washington and is not a product of the private-prep-school, country-club background.

A general practice is a unique and valuable experience. It would also be a good idea to include state supreme court justices and senators on the list of possibilities. Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana is impressive. Also note that there are many fine law schools outside the Ivy League.
