BLACK HAWK, Miss. (AP) - Officials say the lake behind a Mississippi dam that breached Friday has mostly drained.
Dusty Myers, chief of the dam safety division for the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, said Monday that Murdock Lake, which had been about 20 feet (6 meters) deep, has declined to less than 6 feet (1.8 meters) deep.
He says workers were unable to open a spillway Monday to completely drain the Carroll County lake. State officials are asking the drainage district that owns the lake to finish emptying it.
The collapse sent water roaring down Abiaca Creek, closing several roads on Saturday and causing three houses to be evacuated. Myers says evacuation orders have been lifted.
The dam was built in 1965 to control flooding and erosion - one of hundreds statewide.
