SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Salt Lake City Fire Department is preparing to dedicate a station it says is one of few in the country to create as much renewable energy as it uses.
The department will dedicate the new Station No. 3 on Wednesday. It generates its own power from a 110-kilowatt solar array with more than 300 panels.
Located in the Sugar House neighborhood, it also has energy-efficient features like triple-pane window glazing.
The city says it’s the second on the country to have be a net-zero energy building, after another Salt Lake City fire station was dedicated in May.
It’s a two-story with a three-bay garage, rooms for firefighters to sleep, offices, a kitchen and training rooms. There’s also a meeting room open for public use.
The old station building will officially close on Friday.
