OPINION:
Justice Clarence Thomas called the sexual harassment accusations against him “a high-tech lynching” designed to keep a conservative black judge off the U.S. Supreme Court. After considerable deliberation, the Senate approved his appointment. Many people said his reputation was ruined. I disagree completely. In my opinion, Justice Thomas is among the greatest African-Americans of the 20th century.
Another great African-American with enormous tenacity was Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Sr., the first black American soldier to be elevated to the rank of general. He moved forward despite the obstacles a segregated Army placed before him. It was largely as a result of his efforts and tenacity that President Truman issued Executive Order 9981, ending segregation in the U.S. armed forces. Davis’ efforts paid off handsomely.
Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh also faced charges of sexual misconduct. While his main accuser seemed sincerely hurt by what she says happened to her 36 years ago, she could not produce actual evidence that young Kavanaugh had been the perpetrator. Much of what she said that would prove her point, in fact, contradicted her statements. Again, many people said Justice Kavanaugh was totally destroyed. However, again I disagree. His tenacity, as well as President Trump’s continued support, gets my strong approval. American judicial values were upheld. Evidence matters, corroborating witnesses are important and “innocent until proven guilty” was respected by a majority of the Senate. I believe an increasing number of Americans will come to this opinion in the next four weeks leading up to the election and beyond.
