OPINION:
Only three times in the history of American politics has an incumbent president’s party won at the midterm elections: In 1934, 1998 and 2002. And on those three occasions something big always happened.
Due to the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was given more room to carry out his election promise of the New Deal. After winning the 1996 presidential election, in 1998 President Bill Clinton was impeached by Congress for lying under oath. The voters decided to punish the Republican-held House and Senate.
After his 2000 win with the electoral vote, President George W. Bush won the 2002 midterms, mainly due to the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on American soil. The voters decided to give the Republicans room to govern.
So, according to history, it is unlikely that President Trump will hold onto the House come November. But a booming economy, threats of impeachment of both the president and now Justice Brett Kavanaugh by the Democrats also make it likely that the Republicans win the upcoming midterms.
