NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Police say a woman driving the wrong way on a Connecticut highway has died in a head-on crash with an off-duty police officer heading home after his shift.
State police say 27-year-old Katherine Gavidia, of Hamden, was driving south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 91 just after midnight Friday when she collided with a pickup truck driven by Thomas Murray, of Cheshire.
Gavidia died at the scene.
Murray, identified as a New Haven police officer, was taken to the hospital with compound fractures of both legs, multiple fractures to his pelvis, broken ribs and several other injuries.
New Haven police in a statement said they are “breathing a collective sigh of relief that a well-respected brother officer is expected to recover.”
The crash remains under investigation.
