MONKTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say an overturned tanker closed a road after spilling thousands of pounds of compost sludge.
Authorities say the tanker overturned in Monkton around 11 a.m. Thursday, and closed the road from Route 116 to Turkey Lane. MyNBC5 reports officials originally said the tanker was hauling septic sludge, but later said it was compost.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is warning that the spill could flow into the nearby Pond Brook, and have issued a wastewater release alert.
No injuries were reported. Police say the crash happened when the tanker driver swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting an animal that crossed the road.
No other information has been released. Officials are monitoring the site.
