RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Rutland city officials say they may be able to save some ash trees as they prepare for an infestation of the invasive emerald ash borer.
The Rutland Herald reports Rutland Department of Public Works Commissioner Jeffrey Wennberg said Monday that city forester David Schneider had confirmed that the pesticide “Tree-age” could be sprayed on the tress without harming the environment. Wennberg says the city plans to use the chemical on about 100 of the largest trees.
Officials had previously planned to remove the city’s 355 ash trees. Dead trees tend to drop branches that can become road hazards. They’re also harder to cut down than live trees.
Wennberg says the assistant city forester will become certified to apply the chemical which will cut costs.
