OPINION:
In her intelligent and convincing op-ed, “American interests after the Khashoggi murder” (Web, Oct. 30), Shoshana Bryen shows why we should consider our long-term interests in the Middle East rather than a momentary blunder by our ally.
Iran continues to be our enemy in the region. It, now aided by Russia and Turkey, poses a military and economic threat to our friends in the Middle East with its commitment to destroy Israel and to change the leadership of its Arab neighbors.
Admittedly, the murder of Jamal Khashoggi was a mistake on the part of young leadership in Saudi Arabia, but the Saudi regime is one that treasures the support of the United States in avoiding a mutual catastrophe from an aggressive Iran.
Contrary to Lord Palmerston, we not only have friends but interests in the region.
