NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island man who police allege severely injured his newborn son is facing charges.
Twenty-two-year Daniel Walker, of North Providence, was charged Tuesday with first-degree child abuse.
Police say Walker called 911 on Thursday when the infant stopped breathing. Investigators say Walker told police the child had choked on formula. The child’s mother was at work at the time.
The infant was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital where doctors found head injuries consistent with abuse. Police say doctors determined the infant was “neurologically devastated.” It’s unclear if the child will survive.
The Department of Children Youth and Families determined the injuries were probably caused by “maltreatment.”
Walker is being held on $100,000 bail.
