PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine’s Jewish community is unifying following a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that left 11 dead.
The Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine and other organizations issued a joint statement Sunday denouncing hate crimes.
Authorities say Robert Gregory Bowers opened fire during a service at Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh Saturday morning, killing 11 and wounding six.
The Jewish Community Alliance in Portland, Temple Shalom Synagogue-Center in Auburn and Adas Yoshuron Synagogue in Rockland are all having special services this week in memory of the victims.
Dresdner Temple Shalom Synagogue-Center Rabbi Sruli Dresdner says there’s been “an outpouring of support from the non-Jewish community” in Maine. Dresdner and other leaders plans to offer intense service, open discussion and grief counseling.
