RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont ski champion who some consider the state’s greatest athlete of all time is being remembered with a new sculpture in her honor in her native Rutland.
The statue of Andrea Mead Lawrence is the latest sculpture in Rutland’s growing trail of public art that is designed to honor contributors to the region’s history.
Lawrence won two alpine Olympic gold medals at the 1952 games in Norway.
She learned to ski at Vermont’s Pico Peak ski resort, which was owned by her parents.
After her Olympic career, she founded the Andrea Lawrence Institute for Mountains and Rivers to preserve the Sierra Nevada.
In 2011, President Barack Obama signed an act naming a 12,240-foot (3,730-meter) California peak “Mount Andrea Lawrence.”
Lawrence died in California in 2009 at age 76.
