NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The International Tennis Hall of Fame has launched an initiative that helps underprivileged students in Newport.
The Newport Daily News reports the Hall of Fame launched Team Future Aces Modeling Excellence, or TeamFAME, last month. It’s part of the National Junior Tennis & Learning system.
Under the program, students visit the Hall of Fame twice during the school week for tennis lessons, leadership development and academic help. Students take field trips and learn about topics like health and wellness.
Hall of Fame CEO Todd Martin says 63 percent of the city’s public school students are in the free or reduced lunch programs. Martin says the organization had the infrastructure to help children through tennis.
The Hall of Fame hopes to incorporate a career-readiness program in the future.
