In a rare move, the NFL fired one of its referees in the middle of the season.

The league let go of back judge Hugo Cruz for failing to maintain “a very high level of performance over a sustained period,” according to Football Zebras.

Chavez missed an obvious false start penalty in a Week 6 game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns — which resulted in a touchdown pass for Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

According to Yahoo Sports, two other referees have been fired before by the NFL — but this is the first time one has been let go during the course of the season in the Super Bowl era.
