BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Burlington man accused in a shooting that wounded an innocent bystander has denied the charges filed against him.

Thirty-seven-year-old Rashad Nashid faces federal firearm possession charges, but local authorities have also charged him with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and other charges. The Burlington Free Press reports Nashid pleaded not guilty to five charges Tuesday, and is currently being detained in federal custody.

He has also denied two federal counts of firearm possession as a felon.

Nashid’s lawyer says he anticipates filing a motion to dismiss.

Police say the shooting happened in February during an argument between Nashid and another man. Police say the dispute escalated with both men pulling guns. Police say Nashid then fired a shot that hit Chelsi Parker, who was struck in the lung but survived.
