MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) - Officials at a Florida zoo have announced the arrival of a baby giraffe.

Brevard Zoo spokeswoman Andrea Hill said in a news release that the giraffe was born Oct. 19 to 18-year-old Johari and 20-year-old Rafiki.

She says the newborn weighed in at 158 pounds and was 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall.

Hill says the as-yet-unnamed calf will remain with his mother behind the scenes for a few weeks before making a public appearance in the zoo’s Expedition Africa exhibit.

She says eight of the zoo’s nine giraffe belong to the Masai subspecies, which is native to Tanzania and southern Kenya.
