Monique Johns, a Democrat vying to become a Delaware state representative, apologized this week after a home surveillance camera captured her stealing her opponent’s campaign material.

Republican Rep. Kevin Hensley told reporters Tuesday that it was “discouraging” to see his 9th District political battle marred by dishonest tactics over the weekend. Voters were informed of Ms. Johns’ actions after a Middletown homeowner posted video of the incident to his social media page.

Footage shows Mr. Hensley making rounds with pamphlets in a suburban neighborhood, followed shortly thereafter by his Democratic Party opponent.

“I pride myself on running positive campaigns ever since I’ve been elected to serve the people of the 9th District,” he told ABC News’ Philadelphia affiliate. “It was just disappointing to see.”

The Democrat did not respond to the network’s request for comment prior to broadcasting, although she did post an apology to her Facebook page.

“It was wrong and I should never have done it,” she wrote Monday. “This was a lapse of judgment that I humbly regret. Please forgive me. I won’t make any excuses for this action. I have apologized to my opponent, my supporters, and now I apologize to the voters of the 9th Representative District.”

The Delaware Democratic Party also admonished Ms. Johns’ tactics, the network reported.
