BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - The Boulder City Council has decided against an immediate moratorium on building new oversize houses amid criticism that the process was being rushed and property rights could be squeezed.

The Boulder Daily Camera reports that most of the 22 people who spoke to the council at a Tuesday meeting were against the measure.

Proponents said a moratorium is needed to prevent smaller, less expensive homes from being torn down and replaced with so-called “McMansions.”

The emergency measure would have temporarily blocked building permits for houses larger than 3,500 square feet (325 square meters) on lots of 10,000 square feet (929 square meters) or more.

City staffers say it takes a year to go through the normal process of researching a proposal, getting public comment and then enacting policy.
