NATICK, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say the man who died in a car crash in Massachusetts last week was a soldier originally from Chicago who worked at an area military facility.

Army officials say Pvt. 1st Class Roman Centeno Jr. died at the hospital Oct. 10 after the car he was in crashed on Route 9 in Natick.

The 21-year-old Centeno served at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick.

The facility’s commander, Col. Sean O’Neil, said in a statement to The MetroWest Daily News that “our organization is hurting today because we lost a wonderful young man - a selfless and dedicated soldier and a close friend.”

The driver was also hurt. The crash remains under investigation but police say speed may have been a factor.
