NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Data from the Rhode Island Department of Revenue shows Newport topped the state in lodging tax revenue for the 2018 fiscal year, collecting $2.5 million.
The Newport Daily News reports that Providence ranked second with more than $2.2 million, and Warwick came in third with $1.2 million.
The state imposes a 7 percent sales tax and a 6 percent lodging tax on visitors who stay in a hotel room or a short-term rental, including those offered by Airbnb. Of the 6 percent, 1 percent goes to the host area.
The data show state revenue from the lodging tax totaled $21.53 million in 2018, close to $2 million more than the previous fiscal year.
Local revenue from the lodging tax was about $5 million, a $650,000 increase year over year.
