BEACON, N.Y. (AP) - The sloop Clearwater is marking a historic milestone this week.

The ship that annually sails the Hudson River is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its keel laying ceremony on Thursday.

The Clearwater was made to look like the Dutch sloops that used to carry supplies up and down the Hudson River. The late folk singer Pete Seeger and other environmentalists wanted the ship to be a symbol of the river’s rebirth and a floating classroom.

The keel laying ceremony took place at a South Bristol, Maine shipyard on Oct. 18, 1968. The ship was launched in May 1969.
