NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Officials now say it will cost $25.6 million to create a new performing arts center at the Newport Opera House.

The Newport Daily News reports that the Newport Performing Arts Center board of directors said in a statement Monday they had approved a revised budget. The board had originally estimated the project would cost $18.5 million.

Board chairman John Cratin says the project ran into “unexpected costs.”

The project received a $4.2 million grant from the state and raised nearly $6 million from donors. According to Cratin, the center has been approved for nearly $4 million in federal and state tax credits.

The board says developers are preparing Phase II of the project.

The Opera House originally opened in 1867.
