DOVER, Del. (AP) - A Delaware county has been fined for 11 separate spills that released nearly 1 million gallons of untreated sewage into a river.
The News Journal reported Monday that the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control fined Kent County $36,130 in penalties and costs for the spills, which spanned July 2016 to February 2017. The order was signed in February.
Kent County Public Works Director Diana Golt says the spills were caused by a variety of reasons, like heavy rainfall and pipeline repair work. Most of the incidents stemmed from problems with one pump station, which Golt says is a central location for flow.
Kent County recently completed an assessment of pipeline conditions, and will determine which to prioritize. Most of the system’s piping dates back to the 1970s.
