MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - All Vermonters who heat their home with heating oil will be burning ultra-low sulfur fuel for the first time this winter.
Matt Cota of the Vermont Fuel Dealers Association says ultra-low sulfur fuel cuts sulfur dioxide emissions by 99 percent. It also reduces the emission of nitrogen oxide by 30 percent.
The change took effect July 1.
Now all the New England states and New York are using the cleaner heating oil.
In addition to releasing fewer pollutants, the cleaner-burning oil prolongs the life of oil heat equipment and will require fewer repairs.
More than half of Vermont homes and business use oil for heat.
