OPINION:
The action or lack thereof of the mayor of the “City of Roses” with respect to the riotous behavior of Antifa — a fascist group if there ever were one — reminds one of that of former Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who in 2015 allowed rioters their space to destroy property and endanger the citizenry (“Portland mayor stands by decision to allow antifa to block traffic, hassle motorists,” Web, Oct. 14).
The chief magistrates of Portland and Baltimore took oaths of their own free will to uphold the rule of law. For the sake of scoring points with the radical left, each violated that oath. These actions are as repulsive as that of officials in earlier decades, when the Ku Klux Klan was allowed to run wild, tarring and feathering and lynching. One has to wonder whether individuals such as Mrs. Rawlings-Blake and Portland Mayor Tim Wheeler have any integrity with respect to their duties as prescribed by their oaths to the aforementioned rule of law.
By allowing the modern-day equivalent of planting burning crosses on the lawns of people the perpetrators wish to intimidate, these two politicians have condoned and encouraged such outrageous behavior.
