EAST BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Bicycle races have been canceled in Louisiana after new rules were imposed in a parish where a councilman was killed while riding a bike.
The Advocate of Baton Rouge reported that West Feliciana Parish imposed rules to improve bike safety after the June death of East Baton Rouge Metro Councilman Buddy Amoroso.
Organizers of a race in St. Francisville have canceled the event to protest the rules.
Those rules include requiring cyclists to wear fluorescent garments and ride single file in groups of 10 or fewer.
The race in St. Francisville had been held for 19 years and attracted visitors from around the world. Participants ride 105 miles through the back roads of Louisiana and Mississippi.
Race organizers canceled the event two days after the parish council approved the ordinance.
