LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - A 45-year-old Massachusetts man who beat his girlfriend until she was unconscious and suffered bleeding in her brain has been sentenced to up to eight years in prison.

The Lowell Sun reports that Christopher Martini was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to multiple charges including assault with intent to murder and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

The Lowell man was charged in April after the victim’s 7-year-old daughter found her mother unresponsive in their home and called her grandfather, who contacted police.

Police say Martini told first responders that his girlfriend had overdosed before trying to pull them away. Doctors later determined the woman’s head injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma.

Martini pleaded guilty to assault charges for shooting another girlfriend in 2014.
