Charles Sweeny, homeowner, kills intruder 5 years after stopping similar burglary: ‘I blasted him’

Would-be burglars keep breaking into Charles Sweeny’s Oklahoma home — and he keeps shooting them.

Tulsa police say Donald Stovall was shot and killed this week by Mr. Sweeny just five years after the latter stopped a similar attempted burglary. The 2013 incident culminated in one serious injury and prison time for two intruders.

“He brought this on himself. I have no sympathy,” Mr. Sweeny told a local Fox affiliate on Tuesday. “Just like I said five years ago: ’If this happens again I’m going to shoot them. I’m not going to hesitate.’ And it happened again. He comes into view and I blasted him. I heard a big commotion in the bathroom and I thought, ’OK, somebody just broke in.’ [I] got the pistol out of its ’hidey place’ [and] cocked the hammer back so that the trigger would be in single-action mode. He comes into view and ’blam!’ that 9 millimeter is real loud inside the house.”

Captain Karen Tipler of the Tulsa Police Department reiterated Mr. Sweeny’s right to defend his life and property.

“If [citizens] feel that there is a danger to themselves or someone else who may be in the home from an intruder, then, yes, they are within their legal rights to defend themselves within their home,” she said, Tulsa World reported Tuesday.
