PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities in Phoenix performed a nighttime rescue by using a helicopter to airlift an injured hiker off South Mountain early Thursday morning.

Fire Capt. Rob McDade said the hiker injured an ankle Wednesday night and that a helicopter was used because the man wasn’t near enough to a paved road to be driven down.

The man was transported to a hospital.
