BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The names of nearly 1,400 soldiers from North Dakota who lost their lives in World War I were read at the state Capitol at the All Veterans Memorial.
The Veterans Day ceremony Sunday began with bells that tolled 11 times as part of a national commemoration called Bells of Peace. The Bismarck Tribune says on the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the war, members of the North Dakota World War I Centennial Commission took turns reading the names and hometowns of the state soldiers.
Commission chairman Darrell Dorgan says many of the 28,000 North Dakotans who served in World War I were immigrants. Dorgan says they came to the United States to live the American dream. And, when the time came to serve, they stepped forward and were willing to fight for democracy.
