LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a contractor installing a sewer line apparently struck a natural gas main in southern New Jersey, sparking a fire that spurred numerous evacuations but caused no injuries.
The fire in Lakewood was reported around 8 a.m. Monday. Utility crews soon responded and were able to stop the flow of gas a short time later.
Officials say the fire sent flames shooting high into the sky before the blaze was extinguished a short time later. Some homes were reportedly damaged by the blaze, but further details were not immediately available.
