BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Some non-clergy Roman Catholics in Buffalo say they want to rebuild trust in the church amid criticism of the way leaders have responded to clergy sexual misconduct.

Nine prominent community members said Thursday they are brokenhearted and angry and don’t believe the Diocese of Buffalo can reform itself. The panel has scheduled a symposium at Canisius College for Nov. 28 with a focus on protecting victims, holding leaders accountable and healing the church.

The announcement comes amid state and federal investigations of the diocese, and calls for Bishop Richard Malone to resign.

The diocese on Wednesday announced the latest suspension of a priest pending investigation of an abuse complaint. It’s the 16th suspension since March.
