MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - State economists are estimating that Vermont state revenues will be $44.2 million above projections for this fiscal year.
The two economists met Monday afternoon with the Emergency Board.
Republican Gov. Phil Scott said his administration had accounted for a $20 million to $25 million surplus and said Monday’s forecast for $20 million more is great news. Scott has proposed using $20 million on his new education funding proposal to avoid a property tax rate increase but lawmakers have other ideas.
Democratic Sen. Jane Kitchell, chair of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, and a member of the Emergency Board, says using one-time money to solve ongoing issues is not good fiscal practice.
She says a logical place for the additional revenues would be for teacher health care.
