DETROIT (AP) - A nearly century-old partnership between a Detroit hospital and university medical school that was set to be severed is being extended - at least for a short time.
The Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University Physician Group on Monday announced a six-month extension. They’ll use the first three months to see if they can come up with a new working model and the next three either developing it or winding down the partnership if no agreement is reached.
The nonprofit physician group employs about 300 doctors who teach and conduct research at the university while providing specialty care at the medical center’s hospitals, owned by Dallas-based Tenet HealthCare.
The physician group’s contract was to expire after May 15. The institutions have had a strained relationship over finances and contracts.
