BEND, Ore. (AP) - The Deschutes Historical Museum has selected an Oregon City artist to create a sculpture honoring ’Klondike Kate,’ a vaudeville actress in the Yukon Territory who later moved to Oregon.

The Bulletin reports that Kate Rockwell became famous during the gold rush and after the rush was over, she moved to Oregon and homesteaded on five acres in the Bend area.

She was also known as an avid rock collector and would garden in her vaudeville dresses and slippers.

The sculpture combines her identity as a performer with her identity as a rock collector.

Winning artist Jenny Ellsworth’s sculpture will feature metal shovels welded together to appear like a dress covering a collection of Klondike Kate’s rocks.

Rockwell died in 1957 in Sweet Home, Oregon.
