JAMESTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A sixth-grade science and social studies teacher has been named Rhode Island’s Teacher of the Year.
Charlene Tuttle was presented the award at a surprise ceremony at The Lawn School in Jamestown Wednesday morning.
Tuttle has been an educator for more than 25 years. In her time at the Lawn School she has created a program to help students build underwater vehicles, ran an after-school coding program and worked with Roger Williams University to study the environment.
Tuttle was nominated for the award by her colleagues and students, and she says she is “elated, honored and humbled to have been chosen.”
Tuttle will now work with the state Department of Education to develop policy.
She is also eligible to enter the national Teacher of the Year competition.
