BERLIN, Vt. (AP) - A newly constructed boating access that will allow non-motorized use of Vermont’s Berlin Pond is ready for people willing to carry their kayaks and canoes the short distance to the water.

The Times Argus reports the grassy area will provide parking surface for up to eight vehicles near the outlet at the northern end of the pond.

Michael Wichrowski of the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says the area is designed for use by those who want to fish or paddle around the 256-acre pond that also serves as Montpelier’s public drinking water supply.

The pond was off-limits to recreational use until a 2012 Vermont Supreme Court ruling opened the pond for low-impact recreational use.
