With Chris Thompson still rehabbing his broken leg, there’s room for a running back to emerge as the Redskins’ reliable pass-catching back.

Following Thompson’s injury, Kapri Bibbs did a decent job of filling that role after he was promoted off the practice squad in December.

It will be interesting to see if Bibbs can continue to make an impact in a crowded running back room.

Byron Marshall, however, appeared to catch Gruden’s eye last week at OTAs. Marshall hardly saw the field last year — appearing in four games before breaking his hand on a kick return in practice.

“Byron Marshall, I mean, he had a couple great routes,” Gruden said. “He’s running the ball between the tackles. Bibbs had some big runs [last Tuesday]. … I feel really good about where our running backs are right now. Competition’s great, and it’s going to continue to be so. I think that position will be one of strength this year.”

Marshall was signed off the Eagles’ practice squad in November after running back Rob Kelley suffered an ankle injury. He ran for 32 yards on nine carries and caught six passes for 36 yards.

Thompson is expected to return for training camp.
