Moviegoers appear to be less than enthused about a pansexual Lando Calrissian and Alden Ehrenreich’s starring role in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”
Early tracking numbers for the latest installment of the “Star Wars” franchise does not bode well for Disney and Lucasfilm. The project, reportedly budgeted over $250 million, is expected to make between $130 million to $150 million over the holiday weekend.
The Hollywood Reporter noted Wednesday that accurate projections would place “Solo” among “the lowest domestic opening of the four [Disney] films, and come in behind fellow stand-alone film Rogue One, which debuted to $155.1 million in December 2016.”
THR’s dour data comes just days after “Solo” co-writer Lawrence Kasdan told HuffPost that actor Donald Glover will portray a pansexual version of Lando Calrissian.
“There’s a fluidity to Donald [Glover’s] and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality,” Mr. Kasdan told the website on May 17. “I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of. He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun. I don’t know where it will go.”
“Solo” will premier domestically May 25. The film stars Mr. Ehrenreich and Mr. Glover alongside Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke.
