PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Department of Health has stopped the sale of live frogs and turtles at a local supermarket.

WPRI-TV reports the health department issued the order at The Good Fortune in Providence Tuesday and tagged the animals. Officials with the Department of Environmental Management will return Wednesday to assess their condition.

Animal advocates had launched a petition in protest of the animals’ sale. Laura Barlow of Rhode Island Vegan Awareness says the animals were in terrible condition, making it a public health and safety concern.

The health department says grocery stores are not allowed to sell those types of animals for human consumption.

An unidentified manager at the supermarket says they will comply with the health department’s orders.
