MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - A lane change to help deal with traffic problems on a South Carolina interstate bridge caused backups of its own.

Local media reported traffic on eastbound I-526 backed up for miles Monday morning during the first rush hour in which that side of the highway shared a lane with westbound motorists at the Wando River bridge in Mount Pleasant.

South Carolina Transportation Department Secretary Christy Hall said the change worked as expected Monday.

State officials opened the eastbound lanes of the bridge Sunday to two-way, two-lane traffic.

The westbound side of the bridge is expected to be closed until June 11 as crews repair a broken cable found May 14.

Transportation officials said two-way traffic on the eastbound lanes is simply another option for drivers dealing with the closed bridge.
