MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Supreme Court is heading into its second century in its home in Montpelier, next door to the Statehouse.
A centennial celebration was held Friday outside the building, which opened May 7, 1918.
The Times Argus reports Chief Justice Paul Reiber said the event was to “re-consecrate this building to another century of service to Vermont.”
He says the building is more than an assembly of Barre granite, concrete and furnishings. What makes it important is what happens inside, the final destination for civil, criminal, family, probate and environmental cases.
The Supreme Court was established by the 1777 constitution. For more than a century the justices heard cases across the state. The court’s first permanent home was in the Statehouse.
The Supreme Court building cost just under $200,000.
