PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state is kicking off a summer-long game aimed at getting children and parents outdoors and involved in more physical activity.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says its 10th annual Great Outdoors Pursuit begins Saturday with a guided hike around Peck Pond, arts and crafts and face painting.
Participants in the hike will meet at noon at the Pulaski State Park and Recreation Area in Glocester, Rhode Island. The events conclude at 3 p.m.
Families earn rewards for participating in scheduled outdoor events throughout the summer. Participants register for free online and print a Pursuit Passport.
Last year, about 850 people participated.
Saturday is also national “Kids to Parks Day,” a day of outdoor play organized by the nonprofit National Park Trust.
