CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia health officials have announced enhanced efforts to prevent more hepatitis A cases in Kanawha and Putnam counties.
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said in a statement on Friday that part of those efforts include embedding an epidemiologist at the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.
The agency’s Bureau for Public Health has confirmed 64 cases of hepatitis A in Kanawha and Putnam counties and eight cases in Cabell, Lincoln, Wayne and Wyoming counties.
Hepatitis A is a serious, highly contagious liver disease that can causes symptoms including nausea, vomiting, belly pain, fever and loss of appetite.
