ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (AP) - A Virginia man sentenced to six months in jail for hanging a black-faced dummy by a noose in his front yard is headed back behind bars for violating the terms of his probation.
The Roanoke Times reports 54-year-old Jack Eugene Turner of Rocky Mount was cited for spitting on his neighbors’ mailbox.
The mailbox belongs to the same black family Turner was convicted of trying to intimidate with the noose and dummy.
Judge Joseph Canada ruled Wednesday that Turner had violated a good behavior requirement.
The newspaper reports that in delivering the 90-day sentence, Canada said Turner’s actions illustrated his “hatred for black people.” But he said “all the punishment in the world” likely wouldn’t change Turner’s attitude.
Turner was taken into custody at the end of the hearing.
