BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore Democrat has dropped his bid to change the title of the city’s schools chief from “CEO” to “superintendent” amid accusations of sexism.
The Baltimore Sun reports that Del. Keith Haynes said Friday that he’ll withdraw the bill, following a contentious exchange at the weekly meeting of Baltimore’s House delegation.
Backed by the city teachers’ union, the proposal would have switched the title to place a greater emphasis on academics.
Del. Brooke Lierman concurred with AFT-Maryland political coordinator Todd Reynolds that “words matter,” but in the manner that Sonja Santelises’ title encouraged girls to aspire to be CEOs. Del. Maggie McIntosh said the bill would likely not have been proposed if a man was in charge. She also said that the title aptly reflects Santelises’ responsibilities, which include finances.
