President Trump is still expected to officially roll out tariffs on steel and aluminum imports by the end of the week, the White House said Wednesday.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders offered the reassurance as the announcement appeared stalled amid intense opposition from U.S. trading partners around the world and Capitol Hill lawmakers from both parties.
“We are still on pace for an announcement on that at the end of this week,” Mrs. Sanders told reporters at the White House.
She said the final order was still being written.
“Look, it’s a lengthy process finalizing the details,” she said. “It’s a complicated process, and we want to make sure we every i’s dotted and all t’s are crossed.”
Mr. Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign rally Saturday in southwest Pennsylvania, deep in steel country.
The rally is just days before a special election there in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District that is viewed as a bellwether for 2018 midterms.
But Mr. Trump is not expected to sign the order at the rally.
“That’s a separate type of event,” Mrs. Sanders said.
