LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - The first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize will be in Massachusetts to talk about nonviolent activism.

Tawakkol Karman is visiting UMass Lowell on Tuesday for the school’s Day Without Violence event commemorating the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death.

Karman is a journalist and human rights activist known for supporting women’s rights in her home country of Yemen.

She shared the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize with Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee and the first female president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Karman was 32 years old when she won the prize and was its youngest recipient at the time.

UMass says the event will focus on nonviolent activism as a means of struggle, change and success. The event honors King, who was killed April 4, 1968.
